An implantable loop recorder is used to monitor the heart rhythm. In contrast to 24-hour ECG monitors and event recorders it is inserted under the skin and can be used to monitor the heart rhythm for a few years, making it ideal for assessing infrequent intermittent symptoms such as collapses.
The ILR is very small in size similar to a standard USB memory stick. This device is inserted under the skin of your chest wall hrough a very minor surgical procedure performed under a local anaesthetic. It monitors your heart rhythm and if a collapse or palpitations occur can be interrogated to see what the rhythm was.
It is mostly used by patients who suffer from episodic palpitations or fainting spells that are too infrequent to be captured on ECG or 24-hour ECG. It can be removed after a diagnosis is made, or if no further symptoms are experienced over a period of time.
An implantable loop recorder can be a very useful way of making a diagnosis for palpitations or collapses. Our expert Consultant Cardiologists are trained in their use and are available for consultation on any day of the week and weekends as well.
